Oded & Shani’s Story
Shani, Oded's daughter, received a diagnosis of RhabdoMyoSarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer, at the tender age of nine months. Her case was particularly challenging due to her age and the location of the cancer. Although they initially sought treatment in Israel, where they resided, the soon realized that Shani’s medical team had no experience with this specific cancer type in a child so young.
Recognizing the need for specialized expertise, Oded and his family embarked on a global quest to find the most advanced and effective treatment options available. Despite the challenges, including Oded's wife being pregnant with their second child, they made the brave decision to relocate to the United States, where doctors had more experience dealing with this rare cancer in very young patients. This decision proved to be a life-saving one for Shani.
Shani's battle against cancer was marked by numerous rounds of chemotherapy, taxing radiation therapy sessions, and multiple surgeries. But today, she is a vibrant eleven-year-old who passionately enjoys playing soccer.
Looking back on their challenging journey, Oded stresses the importance of active involvement in decision-making when a child is diagnosed with cancer. Acquiring a grasp of medical terminology and understanding treatment options empowers families to engage effectively with medical professionals. After Shani's miraculous recovery, Oded made it his mission to support other families facing the traumatic diagnosis of childhood cancer.
